Roadgrip has been carrying out refurbishment works within the lift lobby areas of the car parks at Westfield London, removing worn floor coatings and preparing the surfaces for new resin finishes.
For high-profile retail destinations like Westfield, maintaining these transition spaces is important. Lift lobbies are some of the most heavily used pedestrian areas within a car park and form a key part of the visitor experience as people move between parking areas and the shopping centre itself.
They see constant footfall, trolley traffic and daily wear, meaning floor finishes inevitably begin to deteriorate over time. Coatings can become worn, stained or polished smooth, affecting both appearance and slip resistance.
Before any new resin flooring system can be installed, the existing surface has to be properly prepared.
Simply applying a new coating over an old or failing surface risks poor adhesion, premature wear and inconsistent finish quality. The underlying substrate needs to be clean, level and mechanically prepared to ensure the new system bonds correctly and performs long term.
For this project, Roadgrip used a combination of diamond grinding and orbital grinding techniques to remove the existing coatings and prepare the concrete substrate underneath.
Diamond grinding uses specialist abrasive tooling to strip away old surface layers, adhesives and contaminants while also smoothing and profiling the concrete. This creates a clean, uniform surface ready for recoating.
Orbital grinding was then used in more detailed areas and around edges to refine the finish and ensure consistency across the lift lobby spaces.
Together, these methods remove failed or worn coatings, eliminate surface contamination and create the correct surface profile for resin adhesion, which helps to improve the overall finish.
All works were completed using electric-powered grinding equipment. In enclosed environments such as multi-storey car parks and lift lobbies, this offers major advantages over traditional fuel-powered machinery including reduced noise and zero exhaust emissions.
This is particularly important on projects carried out within operational retail environments, where minimising disruption is a key part of the delivery process.
Once the grinding and preparation works were complete, the lift lobby areas were ready for the installation of new resin floor coatings designed for better durability, safety and appearance.
