After a season of travelling between some of the world’s great cities, our motorsport team returned home to London for the season’s final Formula E track installation of the year.
Roadgrip Motorsport has continued its long-running support of Formula E throughout the racing calendar. For the London finale, our team headed to ExCeL London to install the sporting lines, anti-slip painted areas and large-scale branding for one of the most unusual temporary circuits in international motorsport.
The London E-Prix takes place on the world’s only indoor-outdoor race circuit, with Formula E cars racing through the ExCeL exhibition halls before heading outside around the Royal Docks and then back into the building.
For most of the year, ExCeL London hosts exhibitions, conferences and major events. For Formula E weekend, part of the enormous venue becomes a racing circuit.
Roadgrip’s job was to apply the markings and painted areas that define that route, using specialist anti-slip paint systems suitable for motorsport. Sporting lines were installed throughout the circuit, alongside the distinctive Formula E colours that visually connect the indoor and outdoor sections.
The scale of ExCeL provides plenty of opportunity for Formula E’s visual identity to make an impact.
Our team installed large-scale sponsor graphics throughout the venue, including branding for ABB, Julius Baer and ATTACK MODE. Many of the graphics are substantial painted installations designed to be seen from grandstands, overhead cameras and television coverage around the world.
Applying graphics at this scale requires careful setting out. Designs that look relatively simple on a computer screen can extend across large areas of track, run-off or floor once transferred to the venue. Proportion, alignment and colour all need to work when viewed from the camera positions and spectator areas for which they were designed.
There aren’t many jobs where you can start painting a race track inside an exhibition hall and finish outside beside the Thames – but that’s precisely what makes the London E-Prix distinctive – and why it was a fitting place for our Motorsport team to finish another season working alongside Formula E.
