The Silverstone Circuit is constantly evolving to meet the demands of modern motorsport, and this week, Roadgrip Motorsport was back on the track as part of the preparations for this year’s Formula 1 British Grand Prix.
Our focus was on the iconic Hamilton Straight, home to the circuit’s start/finish line and grid; an area where accuracy, visibility, and performance are critical.
As car dimensions have increased in recent years, grid slot specifications have changed with them. This has led to multiple rounds of adjustments on the Hamilton Straight, often with previous markings being blacked out and new ones added over the top. While effective in the short term, the result was a visually cluttered surface that resembled a patchwork quilt (not ideal for one of the world’s most-watched grids).
Our team were brought in to remove the outdated grid markings cleanly and precisely. Using ultra high-pressure (UHP) water systems, we stripped away the old lines without damaging the asphalt beneath to provide a clear, accurate foundation for the updated grid layout.
We were also asked to deep clean the surface of the Hamilton Straight to prepare it for the intense demands of F1. Over time, race cars deposit large amounts of rubber, oil, and debris, particularly in braking zones and grid positions. This build-up, known as “rubbering in”, changes the grip levels and can reduce surface performance.
Our UHP cleaning technique effectively removes this residue while preserving the underlying texture of the track. That texture, made up of micro and macro surface features, is a crucial part of circuit design. It delivers consistent grip and efficient drainage in all conditions, but when clogged with rubber and oils, its performance drops.
By restoring that texture, we help reset the track surface to its optimal condition, ensuring safety, consistency, and peak performance for drivers come race day.
From tidying up the grid to restoring the surface beneath, we’re proud to support Silverstone in keeping its world-famous circuit sharp, safe, and ready for the next chapter in F1 history. Learn more at Roadgrip Motorsport.
