Roadgrip Airports have travelled to the remote, volcanic islands of the Azores in the mid-Atlantic to groove the runway of a major airport in the region.

Working with our Italian partner, our team took three flights (including a small island hopper) to transport them and our grooving equipment to the small island with a population of just 2,000 inhabitants.

We were there to assist with upgrading the runway to increase its capacity for larger planes. Part of those improvements involved grooving the runway, which improves landing safety for bigger planes. Read more about the advantages of grooving here: What is Runway Grooving?

We grooved (saw cut) 43,000m2 of runway at central 30m-wide strips. This eliminates the risk of hydroplaning in wet weather and ice formation in cold weather. It has also been shown to reduce braking distance in dry climates.
