At Japan’s Fuji Speedway, the pit lane was the focus of Roadgrip Motorsport’s latest World Endurance Championship (WEC) project where we installed the sponsor branding and line marking.

Fuji Speedway sits at the foot of Mount Fuji, one of Japan’s most recognisable landmarks. On a clear day, the mountain provides an extraordinary backdrop to the circuit, although the region’s changeable weather can make visibility rather less predictable.

With heavy downpours during practice and a demanding six-hour race to follow, the project was a reminder that motorsport branding must do considerably more than look good.

Durable race track markings to meet FIA standards

Unlike a painted logo in a relatively quiet run-off area, pit lane graphics are exposed to a particularly demanding environment.

Throughout a WEC race, the pit lane sees repeated vehicle movements, braking, acceleration and turning, alongside the activity of mechanics, equipment and support crews.

For our motorsport team, this makes the selection and application of materials especially important, as we consider the location of each graphic, the condition of the pavement and the likely exposure to vehicle movements and weather. Visibility, durability and surface safety all need to be considered when preparing artwork for an active motorsport environment.

Track markings fit for sponsors and drivers

Pit lane branding may appear straightforward when viewed on television, but its installation demands an understanding of pavement surfaces, coating performance, operational requirements and the conditions the finished artwork will encounter.

The finished markings were clear and visually consistent (to meet sponsor requirements), while the coatings and application methods ensured safety for drivers.
