Roadgrip Airports has successfully completed runway grooving works at VC Bird International Airport in Antigua, further enhancing runway safety at one of the Caribbean’s busiest aviation gateways.
Using one of our heavy-duty runway grooving machines from Roadgrip’s specialist fleet, our experienced airfield team cut precision grooves across the runway surface to improve drainage, increase braking performance and reduce the risk of hydroplaning during wet weather operations.
While Antigua is renowned for its sunshine, its tropical maritime climate also brings periods of intense rainfall, particularly during the wet season and the Atlantic hurricane season. Heavy downpours can deliver significant volumes of water onto runway surfaces within minutes, making rapid surface drainage essential for safe aircraft operations.
Runway grooving involves cutting a series of precisely engineered channels into the pavement surface. These grooves allow water to escape from beneath an aircraft’s tyres during landing and take-off, helping to maintain direct tyre-to-pavement contact.
The result is improved braking performance, enhanced directional control and a significant reduction in the risk of dynamic hydroplaning.
