Roadgrip Airports has recently completed the removal of 10,000 square metres of rubber build-up from the runway at Curaçao International Airport, keeping this vital Caribbean gateway operating at the highest safety standards.
Every time an aircraft lands, friction between its tyres and the runway deposits rubber onto the surface. Over time, this rubber can build up to form a slick layer that reduces friction, making it harder for aircraft to brake effectively, particularly in wet weather. Regular removal restores the micro-efficiency of the runway surface (the fine texture of the pavement that helps tyres grip better during landing). In short, clearing away rubber build-up improves aircraft braking performance, reduces the risk of hydroplaning and helps airports meet stringent international safety regulations.
To complete the works, we deployed one of our specialist fleet of rubber removal vehicles. These are designed to harness ultra-high-pressure water technology, which lifts away rubber deposits and paint markings without damaging the underlying surface. The process not only restores the natural skid resistance of the runway but also extends its lifespan by reducing the need for premature resurfacing.
Our fleet is based in the UK, where each vehicle is carefully maintained and serviced before every international project. For ongoing works like our projects in Curaçao, the machines are securely containerised and shipped abroad to our LATAM team who operate the vehicles in the region. The containers we use are designed to fit the vehicles snugly, ensuring safe and efficient transport without wasted space. It’s a system we’ve perfected over years of global operations, allowing us to deliver critical services wherever they’re needed.
By continuing to remove the rubber deposits on the region’s runways, Roadgrip Airports has helped Curaçao International maintain a safe and reliable runway for its airlines and passengers. With our combination of precision technology, careful logistics and global expertise, we’re proud to play a part in keeping international aviation moving smoothly and safely.
