There are street circuits, and then there’s racing past the U.S. Capitol.
For Roadgrip Motorsport USA, the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. was one of those projects where the location alone made every shift memorable.
Our team spent the build-up to the event working around the clock on the streets surrounding the National Mall, installing the striping and large-scale track branding that helped create a completely new INDYCAR circuit in the heart of the U.S. capital.
Roadgrip’s involvement started well before the final paint went down.
Our Motorsport team worked closely with the event organisers on the design, positioning and layout of the circuit striping and painted branding. On a completely new temporary circuit, there isn’t an existing set of markings to simply refresh. Designs created on screen have to be translated onto real streets, accounting for road geometry, barriers, viewing angles and the enormous scale of the finished graphics.
Once installation began, the programme was intense. With an immovable race date approaching, our crews worked day and night to get the circuit ready, applying the operational striping alongside the event graphics that would give the Freedom 250 its distinctive appearance.
The scale and profile of the Freedom 250 meant preparations themselves became part of the story.
FOX planned extensive coverage for the event, deploying around 90 cameras across the circuit and cars, including unusual vantage points designed to capture both the racing and Washington’s monumental setting. WATCH THE VIDEO
As media teams reported on the enormous behind-the-scenes effort required to create the temporary venue, members of the Roadgrip crew even found themselves appearing on FOX coverage while working on the circuit.
Temporary street racing is always an impressive exercise in logistics. Roads designed for everyday traffic must become a functioning motorsport venue, complete with barriers, pit infrastructure, grandstands, sporting lines and branding, before racing can begin.
The finished result was then broadcast from one of the most recognisable cityscapes in the world.
