Roadgrip Airports have returned to Panama, as part of our ongoing maintenance support contract, to remove mould and refresh markings on the airfield.

Panama Pacifico Airport is a key hub for both commercial and private aviation, offering vital connectivity in the region. Located in a tropical climate, the airport faces a unique challenge—mould build-up on the airside areas. The combination of heat and humidity in Panama creates the perfect environment for mould to thrive on asphalt surfaces, which can pose significant safety risks for aircraft operations.

The Risks of Mould on Airfields

Mould accumulation on taxiways, aprons, hold areas, and stands can create slippery surfaces, reducing traction for both aircraft and ground vehicles. If left untreated, this can lead to skidding incidents, operational inefficiencies, and safety hazards for pilots and ground crews. Additionally, mould build-up can obscure essential airfield markings, making navigation more difficult, especially in low-visibility conditions.

Roadgrip’s Environmentally Friendly Solution

To tackle this challenge, Roadgrip deployed ultra-high-pressure (UHP) water blasters to gently yet effectively remove mould from the affected areas. Unlike traditional chemical cleaning methods, UHP water blasting is an environmentally friendly approach that uses only water to lift the mould while a vacuum system simultaneously removes debris. This ensures that the process is not only thorough but also prevents contaminants from spreading into the surrounding environment.

Refreshing Markings with FAA-Approved Paint

Once the surfaces were clean, we refreshed the airfield markings using FAA-approved paint (TTP1952D). This high-quality, durable paint is specifically designed for airfield applications, offering excellent adhesion to asphalt surfaces and resistance to wear from aircraft movements and weather conditions.

To enhance visibility, we applied reflective beads to the markings. These beads play a crucial role in improving pilot and ground crew navigation, particularly at night and during adverse weather. The beads reflect light from aircraft and vehicle headlights, ensuring that the markings remain clearly visible at all times.
