Roadgrip Africa continues to support airports across the region with essential runway maintenance – most recently carrying out rubber removal works across two key Angolan airports.

The project began at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport before the team mobilised their ultra high pressure (UHP) fleet and travelled by road to Catumbela Airport to continue the programme.

This kind of regional deployment of airfield removal equipment is a core strength of the Roadgrip Africa operation to deliver consistent maintenance across multiple locations.

Why Runway Rubber Removal Matters

Every time an aircraft lands, significant amounts of rubber are deposited onto the runway surface, particularly in the touchdown zones where tyres meet the ground at high speed.

Over time, this build-up creates a layer that sits on top of the runway, affecting how tyres interact with the surface. In dry conditions, this may go unnoticed but in wet weather, it becomes a serious safety concern.

For pilots landing at speed, predictable braking performance is critical. Removing rubber restores the runway’s original texture, improves friction and keeps it compliant with international safety standards.

Ultra High Pressure Water Jetting

To carry out the works, our team deployed its fleet of ultra UHP water jetting machines, specifically designed for runway rubber removal.

This method uses extremely high-pressure water to break down and lift rubber deposits from the surface without damaging the underlying asphalt. It is precise, efficient and chemical-free, making it ideal for use in live airport environments.

The process restores the runway’s microtexture (the fine surface detail that provides grip) allowing aircraft tyres to make proper contact with the pavement and improving overall braking performance.

Supporting Safe Landings Every Day

Runway rubber removal is one of those essential maintenance activities that often goes unseen, but plays a vital role in aviation safety.

By restoring friction, improving drainage and ensuring consistent surface performance, Roadgrip Africa helps airports maintain safe operating conditions for every landing, in all weather.
