Roadgrip Airports have completed rubber removal works at Hewanorra International Airport in beautiful St. Lucia.

This large-scale rubber removal project took place on the airport’s 30-year-old runway, 10/28. Despite the challenges of tackling an area that hadn’t undergone rubber removal in over 15 years, the results were a fantastic example of efficiency and effectiveness.

A Runway Ready for Renewal

The scope of work was no small feat: rubber removal covered an expansive 26,600 square meters. Given the runway’s aging pavement and a plan for resurfacing in the near future, our aim was to restore as much functionality and safety as possible while providing actionable insights for future maintenance.

The runway’s condition, marked by years of heavy use, presented layers of hardened rubber accumulation. Our team had to work through the night using our ultra-high-pressure water jets to complete the removal, leaving the surface clean and ready for friction analysis.

Friction Testing: Positive Results Despite Challenges

Friction testing was conducted at speeds of 65 km/h and 95 km/h and the results highlighted significant improvements and safety standards required for safe aircraft operation. The friction tests also revealed areas where the surface performed well and others where age-related wear affected results.

Insights and Recommendations for the Future

The team’s analysis confirmed the areas were free of rubber and dirt. Our team of experts also identified, as part of their routine checks, that some pavements were aging and recommended targeted maintenance to improve these sections. While resurfacing is on the horizon, interim work could enhance friction levels further and ensure continued safety.

Rubber Removed, Ready for Ongoing Maintenance

This project stands as a testament to the impact of proactive maintenance. The runway, now free from rubber buildup, and is performing to safety standards despite its age. This not only enhances current operations but also lays the groundwork for future improvements.
