Roadgrip Tanzania have recently undertaken friction testing and runway rubber removal on Dar Es Salaam’s main airport, Julius Nyerere International airport in Africa.
As the largest airport hub in Tanzania, runway safety is paramount. Rubber build-up on the airfield can cause issues for landing aircraft so we first undertook a CFME friction test to identify which areas of the runway required friction enhancement.
The test results enabled us to begin a deep clean of the priority areas, using our ultra high pressure (UHP) water blasting machines to remove the rubber safety without compromising the asphalt underneath.
Our team removed over 30,000 sqm of rubber over a one month period. Whilst the runway remained operational, we worked in night shifts to minimise disruption to air traffic.
To ensure the runway met aviation standards, we then conducted another CFME friction test.
